Sectors

Feed Finishing
The key GEMS1 feed finishing intervention is working with interested feed finishers to establish sound business models for fattening of cattle and sheep and goats at a young age using either supplementary feeding or zero pasture models in feedlot as well as village and household levels. The main geographical intervention focus is the northern state of Kano with additional activities in Kaduna State and Lagos. Meat Processing and Retailing
GEMS1 is working with small local and private sector abattoirs on improved meat processing inter alia supplying local meat shops in Kano, Kaduna, Abuja and Lagos, Master Meats for onward supply to Shoprite supermarkets), Spar and the Grand Mall group supermarkets, and contracts with hospitals, schools, restaurants and hotels. Finished Leather Goods (FLGs)
In the FLG sector, GEMS1 is working with a range of partners in and services providers in Kano, Kaduna, Abuja (the FCTA and surrounding areas), Lagos, Aba (Abia State), Onitsha (Anambra State) and Owerri (Imo State) on improving quality materials, production techniques and marketing. Finished Leather
GEMS1 is working with key export tanners in Kano to improve their manufacturing process responsive to changing market requirements, and to strengthen their market access. For more information, download the GEMS1 Output Fact Sheet: Finished Leather.

Business Membership Organizations (BMOs) and Advocacy
GEMS1 is working with regional FLG, Finished Leather and Skin Trader BMOs. Interventions include: upgrading BMO management and organizational skills; assisting regional BMOs to identify key advocacy issues and to establish national associations to undertake collective advocacy initiatives while facilitating regional advocacy sensitization events; upgrading BMO demand-driven services delivery and facilitation with special emphasis on business networking and access to finance;  and, assisting BMOs and national associations to develop/upgrade standards and practices with appropriate self/public sector regulation in support of sector upgrading and systemic competitiveness.
